Qalam wa Lawh seeks to provide special Arabic education for children using the latest international standards and best practices in learning and by teaching the language through a pioneering curriculum that helps spread the Arabic language and culture.

The Importance of Arabic Programs for Children

There are many reasons to encourage children to learn Arabic. For example, even though children may be born in an Arabic-speaking country, they may be confronted with some problems that render them unable to speak the language properly. They may not have an organized learning environment that takes into account the linguistic differences they find in the home and on the street, and they may perceive Arabic as insufficient or that it has nothing to do with their surroundings.

Furthermore, Arabic is an official language of many Arab countries. It is the language spoken by the media, politics, and academia. Even local dialect-speakers are capable of understanding and communicating in Arabic. In addition, Arabic is one of the official languages of the United Nations, and the fact that an increasing number of foreigners are choosing to learn this language is yet another sign of its importance and universality.

Additionally, there is a lack of Arabic language courses for non-native speakers as a comprehensive and integrated program with standardized tests in an advanced self-learning format. Qalam’s goal is to meet the needs of learners within a wide range of educational levels, ranging from a beginner to a moderate language learner to a skilled practitioner.

Lastly, the urgent need for intercultural communication between youth throughout the world in the context of the exchange of knowledge and usefulness of cultures allows these programs to bring together views at all levels and introduce the Arab and Islamic culture to others in a simple and tolerant manner.

Why teach Arabic to children when they are young?

There are many benefits of teaching Arabic to children.

  1. Learning Arabic at an early age increases the chances of mastering the language.

  1. Stimulating the mind and targeting the cognitive abilities of the child facilitates familiarity with knowledge and academic fields.

  1. Developing the curiosity of the child motivates them to know the components of the Arab civilization of language, culture and history.

  1. Arabic allows the learner to continue to learn once the class has finished and to easily integrate into culture and civilization.

Program Components

In conjunction with global curricula for Arabic language teaching, Qalam’s Arabic for Children program adopts an integrated and diverse approach that specifically targets the students and raises their attention and focus by relying on stories, songs, conversations, games, and constantly motivating the children to engage in activities inside and outside the classroom. For example, linking children to scientific content is a fun way to utilize children's connection to technology and its growing use.

The program also includes a complete curriculum for training on the proper pronunciation of the Arabic language and the teaching of letters, numbers, colors, shapes and linguistic puzzles. Teachers create a sound language environment that achieves linguistic introspection for the children, enabling them to experience language for longer amounts of time. Teachers also focus on the most frequently used and common vocabulary in daily conversations and use interactive tests and interesting games to develop language skills, intelligence and memory.

By encouraging imagination and creativity of the students and expanding their perceptions, Qalam teachers reach beyond traditional classical methods of teaching and provide students with a holistic Arabic education.

Program Goals

The goals of the Arabic Program for Children are as follows:

  1. Immerse the students in the Arabic language.

  1. Build language confidence and motivate speech.

  1. Help the children to understand complex structures and understand the rules of Arabic.

  1. Discuss the Arab culture and civilization in an easy and gradual way.

  1. Recognize the aesthetics of the Arabic language and develop the child's literary taste.

  1. Develop written and spelling skills so that the students can speak correctly.

  1. Enable the child to speak accurately and fluently.

  1. Focus on a holistic approach that takes into account the use of the four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).

  1. Create a language environment that enables the child to experience language through learning skills.

Classroom Activities

In the classroom, Qalam teachers focus on the four learning skills through the use of simple vocabulary and the construction of easy formulas that take into account the level of the learner:

  • Reading: Providing the child with reading texts such as children's stories, traditional written songs and prose and poetic texts, through which children are trained in the skills of recognition, understanding, pronunciation, speed and associated sub-skills.

  • Listening: Training the child to listen, focus, and follow systematically to various texts (animation, storytelling, news, descriptions, persuasive essays).

  • Writing: Teaching the children the process of planning and writing, and training them to translate their ideas in spoken language. This helps students to translate the language into a written text through which the children can express positions in everyday life (feelings, feelings and imagination).

  • Speaking/Conversation: Encouraging and motivating the children to produce oral language on many daily topics, and allowing them to participate actively in speech, answers and free expression, and investing the conversation in language games that enhance the ability to communicate in Arabic.
