Frequently Asked Questions

About Us

Before studying abroad, students often have questions. Below you can find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Qalam programs.

Are the clubs/volunteer activities/excursions required?

No, you are not required to participate in any extracurriculars. However, they are very beneficial in facilitating your language learning. Clubs and volunteer activities are included in the tuition, while excursions are an additional fee.

What is the typical homework load for a student?

Students are expected to study 2-3 hours a night, though this varies depending on your level and the intensity of the course.

Is there any pre-work I should do before arrival?

There is no official prework required before arrival. It would be beneficial to review any previous work from Arabic courses

and practice speaking in order to prepare for the placement and oral exams.

What should I pack if I am living with a host family or in the residence halls?

The residence halls provide most essentials, including bed linens and pillows. Towels and toilet paper are not provided. These are easily available for purchase at most supermarkets. Host families are not required to give you a towel but will provide toilet paper. It is a good idea to bring a small gift for your host family. Please see the student guide for a complete packing list.

If I am learning Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), will I be able

to efficiently communicate withlocals?

While Darija (Colloquial Moroccan Arabic) is the language of daily life in Morocco,

MSA is used for official business and government   communications and is widely understood by locals.

Will I be able to join a gym?

Yes! There are no gym facilities at the residence hall, but there are many gyms within walking distance of the two centers. If interested in a gymmembership, please inform the staff upon arrival and they will be happy to assist you.

Do I need a visa to enter the country?

Depending on what country you are from, you may need to apply for a student visa. Please check before your time of arrival.
