The month of Ramadan comes at a certain time every year to replace many people’s habitual affairs in terms of their religious and worldly affairs. Some Muslims change their habits during the holy month of Ramadan, whether through their actions related to ordinary life or through practicing Islamic rituals. But do the rituals of the month of Ramadan fall more on the cultural side than the religious side? In other words, the role played by a group of people in this sacred month may be a kind of social representation and hypocrisy that falls within a particular cultural framework and has no relation to the religious nature of this great month.

We will discuss these and other questions about Ramadan this Thursday evening while breaking our fast together at the Arabic Language Café:

What are the customs and practices that change during the month of Ramadan? Are the rituals of the month of Ramadan more cultural than they are religious? Can the practices during the month of Ramadan be considered a form of representation and social hypocrisy that have nothing to do with the worshiping nature of the holy month?
